A new season begins down
here at the bookstore (San Felipe Title Co) and
we feel like this will be a fantastic year for
several reasons….. first and foremost we
have moved into a new
location…. After almost 8 years up on
the balcony next to Baja Java and Randy’s
Shadetree computer and internet service we have
moved south a short distance…. We are now
located at 183A Mar de Cortez which is next door
to Cesar’s Restaurant and just down the
block from Champo’s Pizza and Ice Cream
Parlor……… Change is good but
with it comes certainly more than a touch of sorrow….
If not for Karen and Vince talking us into starting
a bookstore in their bakery we would have never
started this venture….. and will miss Karen/Manual
and all the wonderful ladies of Baja Java we all
had such a very special relationship.
Turning
to the positive side and there are many upsides
to the new location….. as we all move up
the age scale the new location is much easier
to access….. and moving from a very crowded
870 sq ft space into one that is 2,400 sq ft it
unbelievable….. much better lighting and
a more relaxing atmosphere …. It is not
a totally completed job but considering the empty
shell of a building we have worked hard with the
help of others to put together what we feel is
a bookstore this community can very proud of and
one which will offer a huge selection of fine
used and new books….. if you would like
to view a few pictures of the move in progress
(back in July) check out our web site and click
onto Gallery …… we moved
approx 600 boxes of books to the new location
and thanks to the engineering skills of Randy
who build the ‘BOOK CHUTE’ the total
move was accomplished in about 4 days and that
included all the book cases….. the new space
has allowed us to put in a really nice selection
of children’s books and hope that in the
future many local children will take advantage
of the fun books available….. in addition
we now have a space for Catalina’s art work
and for other artists who wish to show their own
work….. this in no way will be an Art Gallery
but rather just a space for local artists to show
their work on a limited time basis and will be
absolutely free….. i.e. no sales here at
the book store and thus no commission……
As we close out
2008 and look forward to a new
and promising New Year both Catalina and myself
hope that each and everyone of our friends have
a wonderful holiday period and look forward to
a bright and prosperous New Year…. We all
have much to be thankful for without any doubt…..
And wish to echo the words in Kat’s Korner
regarding the support and thanks we should give
the entire Mexican Community…… all
to often we overlook the fact that this community
has welcomed us into their world and overlook
the shear joy we all share living here in San
Felipe with I believe the most loving and sharing
people in the world……… my own
New Year’s resolution is to give the up
most respect to each and everyone living here…..
and give the children who are learning the art
of commercial commerce selling items on the street
the same respect we do the business and political
leaders….. through the eyes of children
the image of North Americans is seen…..
and ideas implanted forever…..
We wish to apologize first
off to those of you who came down to the bookstore
with the intent of enjoying Kathy Keene’s
wonderful talk and slide show presentation on
the birds of this area…..we have never experienced
a turn out of so many for any event that we have
had here over the years…. Kathy has tentatively
agreed to return in the Spring | Fall and we will be
in a much better position to handle the crowd…….
For those of you who could not find seating and
departed please accept our apology…….We
are working with the nice folks at Sunbelt Publishers
to line up several new and interesting authors
for the new year…..For the many fans of
Daniel Reveles….. Sunbelt is offering a
once in a lifetime chance to see Mexican Riviera
aboard the Cruise Ship SPLENDOR with the author
who’s brought us acclaimed stories from
south of the border…. For more info contact:
Cindy Weaver at 406-270-9919 or cindy@talenttravel.net.....
Now in the store we have
a large selection of Mexican authors…. Such
as Isabel Allende—Carlos Castaneda—Octavo
Paz—Gabriel Garcia Marquez and others……and
many more books on Mexican History in English……..and
many titles on the other countries of Latin America….
And probably no surprise to anyone a large selection
of books on Cuba……
From SUNBELT PUBLISERS
several new and interesting titles have just been
published and are available here at the bookstore……
the first is a very unusual book titled “The
Camino Real and the Missions of the Baja Calif
Peninsula…. The first part covers the fascinating
history and natural world surrounding the Camino
Real. Built by missionaries in hostile lands under
extremely harsh conditions, it history began in
1683 with the first mission founded by the Jesuits.
It came to an end in 1834, when the Dominican
order established the last mission on the Peninsula..
The second part contains a spectacular fold-out-map—more
than 1.80 meters long—tracing the Camino
Real on a satellite image of the Baja Calif Peninsula,
so you can see the dramatic contrasts in the region:
its deserts, mountains, seas, and islands. At
the same time, it allows you to journey through
the Peninsula from one side to the other to its
missions and on its highways. Almost 30% of its
biological wealth is endemic, in other words unique
in the world, with its more than 3,500 species
of plants and animals. Unique to this book is
that the text is both in English and Spanish…..
A second title from Sunbelt
is “Strangers in a Stolen Land” by
Richard Carrico….. This is a fantastic work
of non-fiction…. The original edition of
this book covered San Diego County Indian history
from 1850 to 1880. This expanded edition takes
a far more inclusive view of the narrative that
is San Diego County Indian history….It begins
with what is known of the first inhabitants, not
at a later point based on the start of European
intrusion, and is updated to cover the half-century
between 1880 and 1935 – a period dramatically
different from the previous three decades….
Next week we should be
receiving a limited supply (20 copies) of the
reprint ---THE UNFORGETABLE SEA OF CORTEZ….
Baja Calif Golden Age 1947-1977…. The Life
& Writings of Ray Cannon….. by Gene
Kira…… am certain these copies will
most likely disappear quickly…….
For those of you who do
not have a copy of the BAJA CALIF PLANT FIELD
GUIDE by Norman C. Roberts we have an ample supply
available….. this book as been out of print
for sometime… This is a book about the plants
of Baja and it leaves unsaid the story of one
man’s love for Baja Calif. There are probably
over 4,000 species or varieties of higher plants
that occur in the Baja. This book discusses or
describes over 550 and pictures over 275 of them…….
