OCTOBER 2007
THE
SAN FELIPE TITLE COMPANY’S
BAJA
BOOK BEAT
It seems not that long
ago that Vince and Karen (Baja Java) suggested
that we open up a book store here in San Felipe
and not long after that little idea surfaced we
installed about 10 bookcases into their baking
area...the selection of books was absolutely pitiful….but
nonetheless it was the beginning of the Book Store…..and
we have grown in space and the inventory of books
accordingly…..so another season is about to begin
and once again this summer we have found many
new and interesting titles and a couple of new
Baja Book titles……once again this fall we have
lined up several authors of Baja books which will
be very exciting….we look forward to meeting those
of you who have not yet discovered the best little
book store in the Baja and of course those of
you that have made our store such an interesting
place to visit…..

NEW
BAJA BOOK – OASIS of STONE – Visions of
Baja California
Sur
Photographs
by Miguel Angel de la Cueva. Text by Bruce Berger…….
OASIS
of STONE without a doubt is one of the most beautiful
books we have seen here at the store….Photographer
Miguel Cueva has been
documenting the landscape and cultural heritage
of Baja Calif since
1998. These photo’s speak for themselves….they
are brilliant……The text has been written and his
essays on the intersection of nature and culture
in desert environments have appeared in the New
York Times….Orion and Sierra and many other publications….Mr
Berger is the author of one of the most interesting
of all the Baja titles published. ‘almost an
island’ – TRAVELS IN BAJA CALIFORNIA…..the Los
Angeles Times review of ‘almost an island’ “Here’s
a wide-eyed writer with the curiosity, patience
and observational skills to follow leads, pursue
histories and apple the artistry that takes the
reader down the same paths he visits……There’s
geology, natural history, religion, desert rats,
environmental issues, Mexican politics, music
and adventure…..Mr Berger is scheduled to appear here at the Book Store on
Friday Dec 21st……this will be Mr. Berger’s
first visit to the book store and we are very
excited to have everyone meet and lean more about
this beautiful peninsula we live and share with
nature……….
Just about the time everyone
was heading north and we were closing for the
summer Random House published Alec Wilkinson’s
book “The Happiest Man in
the World”……
An
account of the life of Poppa Neutrino.
Many of us here several years ago were
introduced to Poppa (David) and in varying degrees….and
each have our own opinion of those times…..but
in this fine book the author really takes into
a man’s very unique life….one which some would
find very disturbing and others of us would exciting….in
the past few years I have had the pleasure of
meeting others who have known Poppa and without
any doubt everyone of them have a very vivid picture
of this man……
PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION’ (PBS
RADIO) GARRISON KEILLOR praise for this book.
“Mr.
Wilkinson has built us a marvelous raft of a book
in which we float along listening to an amiable
Christian hobo and champion bull-shitter
expound on the inexplicable, Through him we can
hear that stubborn, restless voice of the hardscrabble
pilgrim that runs through American life, the voice
crying in the wilderness. The writing is elegrant,
and the book, I think, is a masterpiece.” I am
hoping to catch up with Poppa soon and have him
sign a few copies of the book for those of you
who had a chance to meet him. My latest contact
with Poppa found him in the San Francisco Bay
area…..and he now has a much larger craft than
he built down here and will get some photo’s later
this month……A movie based on his life has been
a huge hit at many of this summer independent
film festivals….
