San Felipe Title Company

MARCH-APRIL 2009

The calendar tells me that some of your attention is being directed to the trek back north…. April seems to be a magic month for plans….. of course those who leave San Felipe early will be leaving the area at the most beautiful time of the year….. before you depart it would be a great time to stash a few Baja Books to read over the long summer ahead……. Here are a few suggestions…….
1. Daniel Reveles – This fine Baja writer has 4 published books- the subject of his great books center around the border town of Tecate…. Where ordinary life is spiced with magic……
2. Graham Mackintosh – One of the most popular of the Baja writer’s….. starting with his INTO A DESERT PLACE and his 3 other works…. Graham takes us from deep into the interior of Baja on his 3,000 mile walk about…. to his latest adventure as he spent 2 months on Guardian Angel Island….a uninhabited 42-mile long island in the Sea of Cortez…..
3. Jack Smith – God and Mr. Gomez…. The hilarious account of how the author and his wife learn that it takes God and Mr. Gomez to build a vacation dream house in Baja…..
4. John Steinbeck – The Log from the Sea of Cortez….. This work of non-fiction takes Steinbeck and the biologist Ed Ricketts aboard the sardine boat Western Flyer take a 4,000-mile voyage around the Baja peninsula into the Sea of Cortez in 1940……..
5, Bruce F. Barber – “…of Sea and Sand.” Local author Bruce Barber has put together a fine book of the area…. He refers to it as ‘A drama of Two Living Deserts’
6. Roy S Houston – Natural History Guide to the Northwestern Gulf of California and Adjacent Desert….. This guide covers the immediate area from the northern reaches of the Sea of Cortez to approx. Puertacitos…. There is no other book that I am aware of which covers this area with the expert attention given by Roy…..

As all of us seek more information regarding the Baja and it’s history we have stocked a limited supply of older Baja Book Titles…. Check these books out…. As pointed out by Kat (of the Net) and others there has been far too much bad press concerning the border area….. we all have been asked many times by friends….. IS IT SAFE IN SAN FELIPE? or some version of the question….. and from a desk and reading only wire stories ….. we now have a panel of EXPERTS working at the SAN DIEGO UNION AND L.A. TIMES and many other newspapers…..
Not taking the time to research their articles or before writing under their by-lines and actually coming down to San Felipe and get a up-close view of the hard working/honest folks who are the backbone of this community…… or check out the long running relationship the American/Canadian service clubs have with the local community…… for myself I am sick of it….. and sending an invitation as one of our Canadian friends did yesterday to any and all reporters from north of the border to come down to San Felipe and the bookstore will be more than happy to pay for 2 nights lodging at one of many nice hotels…….A few years ago TIME magazine took the time to send a staff writer to the Baja and San Felipe was one of their stops….. and the resulting article was at least honest from the view of the writer……
